Web MIDI: Control Hardware Synths from Your Browser
What is Web MIDI?
The Web MIDI API allows web applications to connect to MIDI devices directly from the browser. In MIDI Lab, this means your browser can send and receive MIDI—no desktop app or DAW required. Connect your synth or interface via USB, grant access in Chrome or Edge, and the Infinite Engine can stream AI-generated MIDI to your hardware in real time.
Browser Support
Chrome and Edge have the best Web MIDI support. Firefox and Safari have limited or no support. Use Chrome or Edge for the smoothest experience. On Mac and Windows, class-compliant USB MIDI devices typically work without drivers.
Setup
- Use Chrome or Edge—Web MIDI works best in these browsers.
- Connect your hardware via USB. Interfaces, USB-equipped synths, and Eurorack MIDI modules all work.
- Open MIDI Lab and go to the Infinite Engine. When you select an output device, the browser may prompt for MIDI access—grant it.
- Select your device in the output dropdown. Start generating and streaming.
Troubleshooting
If your device doesn't appear: ensure it's connected before opening the page, try refreshing, and check that no other app has exclusive access. On Windows, some interfaces need drivers even for class-compliant mode. If multiple outputs appear, pick the one that corresponds to your synth or interface.
