Where hardware meets AI, and creativity flows
MIDI Lab was born from a lifelong love of synthesis, hardware, and the strange magic that happens when humans collaborate with machines.
Founded by longtime friends and collaborators Stephan and Tim, the project traces its roots back to the early 2000s, long before AI was mainstream. Between 2005 and 2011, the two released multiple albums under their duo Kether, building everything exclusively from hardware synths, drum machines, and raw experimentation. That era shaped our core belief: Music is physical. Creative flow is human. Gear matters.
MIDI Lab exists to honor and modernize that philosophy.
In recent years, the world embraced powerful AI tools that generate finished audio in seconds. But producers, synth lovers, and live performers often need something different: not a completed track, but the musical DNA beneath it.
That's where MIDI Lab comes in. We created an engine that generates symbolic music: actual MIDI you can play, edit, route, tweak, and send into your hardware. Think of it as a creative companion that gives you endless musical ideas while still letting you shape the sound.
We built MIDI Lab because we only have two hands and a room full of synths that all want attention. Our AI doesn't finish songs for you. It fuels your workflow, powers your gear, and keeps ideas flowing so you can stay in the moment: twisting knobs, patching cables, and making the choices only a human can make.
MIDI Lab is for the hardware heads, the DAW explorers, modular lovers and the midnight jam session wanderers. It's for musicians who want technology to expand their creativity, not automate it away.
We're grateful to have the support of some incredible artists and creative minds who believe in what we're building. Redfoo, SidecarTommy, and ill gates have each brought their experience, perspective, and passion for music to help shape MIDI Lab's direction. Their insights — rooted in decades of performance, production, and pushing boundaries — continue to inform how we think about creativity, community, and the future of music technology.
This is the next chapter of our journey with synths. We're merging the soul of those early Kether days with modern AI, creating a tool that doesn't replace musicians: it empowers them.
Welcome to MIDI Lab. Your studio just evolved.
In Memory Of
MIDI Lab is dedicated to our brother Dave, known to all of us as "Lazy Slave."
A core part of our crew, a beautiful mind, and a relentless synth nerd. His spirit, passion, and laughter continue to echo through every note we create. He may just be the ghost in the machine.
